Bafata: The Diocese of Bafatá in Guinea-Bissau marked its 25th anniversary with a heartfelt call for national unity, dialogue, and fraternity. In a Pastoral Letter titled “Fraternity: a Path of Faith and Hope,” Bishop Victor Luis Quematcha urged the Catholic faithful to take the lead in fostering dialogue and solidarity across all segments of society.
Addressed to priests, religious members, laypeople, families, youth, and faith communities, the letter emphasized that the Catholic community must become an active agent of social cohesion. Speaking through Father Augusto Mutna Tamba, the Diocese’s spokesperson, the message was delivered in the presence of regional civil authorities, traditional leaders, interfaith representatives, and a large gathering of the Catholic faithful.
“Catholic Social Teaching constantly reaffirms that fraternity is an essential condition for achieving a just and supportive society,” the letter read. Bishop Quematcha also called on the faithful not to remain silent amid the country’s pressing challenges, particularly with general elections scheduled between 23 November and 14 December 2025. “The Church of Christ cannot remain silent in the face of real issues, especially at this moment when the nation is preparing for elections,” he stressed.
The Pastoral Letter received strong endorsement from civil and religious leaders. Present at the event, Governor Musta Suaré Cassamá highlighted the vital role of cooperation between the Church and the State in promoting societal stability and the well-being of the people. “Collaboration between the Church and the State is fundamental for the well-being of our people and for societal stability,” said the Governor.
Interfaith solidarity was also emphasized by Imam Aladje Tcherno Clabiou, of the Central Mosque of Bafatá, who called upon all Guineans, particularly religious leaders, to work together in nurturing peace and harmony. “It is essential that all of us, Guineans, work together, especially religious leaders, to ensure peace,” he said.
Bishop Quematcha’s message underscores the Church’s commitment to promoting dialogue, understanding, and inclusion. By urging Catholics to actively participate in societal conversations, especially during politically sensitive periods, the Diocese of Bafatá positions itself as a moral and unifying voice in Guinea-Bissau. The anniversary celebrations thus became not only a commemoration of the Diocese’s history but also a platform for advocating national fraternity, civic responsibility, and interfaith cooperation.
As the nation approaches a pivotal election period, the Church’s appeal for dialogue and fraternity serves as a timely reminder that faith communities can play a central role in building a more peaceful, united, and resilient society.
