Keralite Catholic Priests to Unite in Miami for Historic Gathering

Miami: A landmark event for the Catholic Church in the United States is set to unfold this November as Keralite Catholic priests from across America gather in Miami for the first-ever "Keralite Priests’ Koinonia." The event, scheduled for November 18–19, 2025, is being hosted under the auspices of Our Lady of Health Catholic Forona Church, Miami, as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Chicago.

What makes this gathering extraordinary is its inclusivity. For the first time, priests belonging not only to the Syro-Malabar Rite, but also from the Syro-Malankara and Latin Rite will come together in one spiritual convocation. Organizers estimate that more than 500 Keralite Catholic priests are currently serving in various capacities across the United States.

From senior clergy holding diocesan leadership roles, to chaplains ministering in hospitals, to teachers and researchers in American universities, Keralite priests have carved out a vibrant presence across different fields. Many are also known for their administrative and pastoral leadership in parishes, missions, and diocesan institutions.

The name of the gathering, "Keralite Priests’ Koinonia," is deeply symbolic. The Greek word koinonia signifies unity, fellowship, and communion precisely the spirit the convocation seeks to foster. Organizers emphasize that the event will serve as a space for priests to reaffirm their mission, strengthen mutual bonds, and inspire new pastoral energy for future generations.

Bishop Mar Joy Alappatt, head of the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Chicago, is serving as the patron of the event. He is joined by Vicar General Rev. Fr. John Meleppuram (co-patron), parish vicar Rev. Fr. Joshi Ilambassery (chairman), and general convener Joshi Joseph, supported by a network of more than thirty committee leaders and volunteers coordinating various aspects of the gathering.

Organizers have chosen Miami often dubbed the "Kerala of America" as the venue.

The two-day event will feature a thanksgiving liturgy led by hundreds of Keralite priests, alongside the Syro-Malabar Major Archbishop, members of the American Bishops’ Conference, the Archbishop of Miami, and the Bishop of Palm Beach. In addition, state and local leaders including Florida’s governor, senators, congressmen, and mayors are expected to attend the public meeting, cultural programs, and fellowship dinner.

To make the gathering more memorable, organizers are offering free registration and accommodation for participants, along with a boat tour showcasing Miami’s scenic beauty.

The Diocese of Chicago expressed hopes that this unique assembly would radiate beyond Miami, strengthening Keralite Catholic communities across America with a renewed commitment to faith, evangelization, and liturgical life.

Bishops Mar Joy Alappatt and Jacob Angadiath, along with the celebration committee, have extended an open invitation to all Keralite Catholic priests in the U.S. to seize this historic opportunity to celebrate faith, unity, and mission together.
