“Young People Are the Present and Future of the Church”: Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão Inspires Thousands at National Youth Conference

Kochi: A resounding call to faith, leadership, and missionary zeal marked the closing ceremony of the National Youth Conference at the Divine Retreat Centre, Muringoor, as Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), reminded young Catholics that they are “the present and the future of the Church.”

The event, which celebrated the silver jubilee of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), brought together more than 2,500 youth leaders and 200 priests from across India. The five-day celebration concluded with the solemn Holy Mass of Witness, presided over by Cardinal Ferrão, who urged young people to become living witnesses of Christ in today’s changing world.

“You are the bearers of hope for the Church and for humanity,” the Cardinal said in his homily, his voice echoing with conviction. “Stay close to Jesus, and the Church will remain alive through you. Faith is not meant to be stored away but lived courageously.” He drew inspiration from Blessed Carlo Acutis, encouraging the youth to harness their creativity and digital skills in spreading the Gospel message.

Cardinal Ferrão emphasized that Christian leadership must be grounded in prayer, humility, and service. “Never underestimate the power of prayer,” he cautioned. “Without prayer, leadership loses its soul. Your gifts and talents are entrusted to you not for personal pride, but for the glory of God.” He reminded the gathering that the Church’s mission depends on every believer who embraces discipleship actively and joyfully.

The Eucharistic celebration was concelebrated by Bishop Ignatius D’Souza, Chairman of the CCBI Commission for Youth and Bishop of Bareilly, along with Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI; Fr. Chetan Machado, Executive Secretary of the Youth Commission; Fr. John Barman, Associate Executive Secretary; Fr. Anoop Antony, OSJ, Kerala Region Youth Commission Secretary; and Rev. Fr. Maria Antony, National Council member, accompanied by more than 200 priests from different dioceses.

The vibrant congregation witnessed moments of deep devotion, joyful singing, and emotional testimonies from young leaders who shared how ICYM had transformed their lives over the years.

Among the dignitaries attending the ceremony were Shri Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya; Rev. Dr. Augustine Vallooran, VC, Director of the Divine Retreat Centre; and Rev. Sr. Shakhila, CTC, Mother General of the CTC Congregation, who joined in felicitating the young participants and commending the movement’s 25 years of service.

As the conference came to a close, the atmosphere brimmed with renewed enthusiasm and spiritual energy. The youth, waving flags and singing hymns, pledged to live out their faith with integrity, compassion, and missionary passion.

The National Youth Conference 2025 not only celebrated the legacy of ICYM but also lit a new spark of commitment a generation ready to lead, serve, and sanctify the Church of today and tomorrow.
