Death Toll Rises to 54 in Indonesian Boarding School Collapse as Rescue Efforts Continue

Sidoarjo:  The death toll from the tragic collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, has risen to 54, authorities confirmed on October 6, 2025. Rescue teams continue to search for more than a dozen students still missing under the rubble.

The multi-story prayer hall collapsed on September 29 during afternoon prayers. The building, which was being expanded from two to four stories without the necessary permits, failed structurally, leading to the disaster. Most of the victims were students between the ages of 12 and 19. In addition to the fatalities, 97 people were injured, six of whom remain hospitalized with serious injuries.

This incident has drawn national attention to the widespread issue of unregulated construction in Islamic boarding schools across Indonesia, where only a small fraction of schools have official building permits. Authorities have launched an investigation into potential negligence and violations of building codes, with questions being raised about oversight and safety measures in similar institutions nationwide.

Rescue operations are ongoing, and officials have urged the public to remain patient as they continue their search for survivors. Families of the victims are receiving support from local authorities and community organizations.

The tragedy marks one of the deadliest school-related accidents in recent Indonesian history, highlighting urgent concerns about safety standards in educational institutions.
