Beijing: More than 200 hikers remain stranded on the Tibetan slopes of Mount Everest after an unexpected blizzard, as Chinese authorities confirm that all have been contacted and rescue efforts are underway.

Earlier, rescuers guided around 350 trekkers to safety in the township of Qudang, media reports said. The hikers had been exploring the remote Karma Valley, which leads to Everest’s eastern Kangshung face, during China’s eight-day National Day holiday.

Trekkers described the snowfall as unusually heavy for October, with hypothermia posing a serious risk.

Many groups endured nights in overcrowded tents, constantly clearing snow to prevent collapse. Some hikers suffered mild hypothermia despite adequate clothing.

Local villagers and government-organized rescue teams are working to clear snow-blocked paths and escort the remaining hikers to safety in stages.

The same storm system has also caused severe flooding and landslides in Nepal, claiming at least 40 lives.

The incident highlights the unpredictable and extreme weather conditions in the Himalayan region, especially during the peak tourist season.
