Kyiv: Kyiv’s pursuit of European Union membership continues to face significant challenges, particularly due to Hungary’s opposition. Hungary has cited concerns over the rights of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine, effectively blocking progress in Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations.
EU officials, however, emphasize that Ukraine must continue its reform agenda to meet EU standards, especially in key areas such as the rule of law and anti-corruption measures. The EU’s enlargement commissioner, Marta Kos, has engaged in diplomatic efforts to address Hungary’s concerns, including visits to Hungarian and Slovak minority communities in Ukraine.
Despite these efforts, Hungary’s veto remains a major obstacle. Some EU leaders are considering alternative approaches to advance Ukraine’s integration into the bloc. Public support for Ukraine’s EU membership also varies across European countries, indicating potential long-term challenges beyond Hungary’s opposition.
The situation underscores that Ukraine’s road to EU membership will be complex and demanding, requiring sustained reforms and diplomatic engagement.
