Hanoi Faces Severe Flooding Again as Typhoon Matmo Hits

Hanoi:  Hanoi is once again grappling with severe flooding as Typhoon Matmo unleashes heavy rains across northern Vietnam. The city’s drainage systems have been overwhelmed, particularly in central districts, leaving roads submerged and vehicles stranded. Residents have been forced to wade through water reaching up to calf level, while several schools have either closed or shifted to online classes. Flights at Noi Bai International Airport have also faced delays and rescheduling.

This latest flooding comes just a week after Typhoon Bualoi caused widespread devastation, leaving at least 51 dead and causing an estimated $600 million in damages. Many families who had barely completed cleanup efforts are now dealing with fresh losses.

Vietnam’s weather agency has issued warnings of continued rainfall and possible flooding in low-lying areas, with forecasts indicating up to three more storm systems before the end of 2025. The recurring floods highlight the vulnerability of Hanoi’s infrastructure and the increasing challenges posed by intense storm seasons.

Authorities and residents are preparing for further disruptions as the storm season continues, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced flood management measures.
