Thiruvananthapuram: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has revealed that the most common traffic violation detected by surveillance cameras across Kerala is driving without wearing a seat belt.
Between January 1 and October 5, 2025, a total of 1,239,457 challans were issued statewide. Of these, 657,771 were for drivers failing to wear seat belts, and 581,686 for front-seat passengers traveling without them. The total fines expected to be collected under this category amount to around Rs 62 crore.
In comparison, during 2024, authorities recorded 2,573,280 seat belt violations, with fines estimated at Rs 129 crore.
Despite stricter enforcement of traffic regulations aimed at saving lives, officials note that the statistics show many motorists continue to ignore basic safety laws.
Seat belt violations are followed by riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets, while the third most common offense is pillion riders failing to wear helmets, the department added.
