Pope Leo XIV sent a message, signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, to a theological conference in Camaldoli, Italy, titled “What Kind of Bishop in a Synodal Church?”
The Pope expressed his hope that the conference would inspire “a renewed understanding that walking together is the style of life and mission of the Church.”
The four-day event, taking place from October 6 to 9 at the Hermitage of Camaldoli in central Italy, focuses on exploring the role and ministry of bishops within a synodal Church. It seeks to examine how the Church can foster a synodal style and structure by rethinking episcopal ministry from a synodal perspective.
In his message addressed to Dom Matteo Ferrari, Prior General of the Camaldolese Congregation of the Order of Saint Benedict Pope Leo XIV described the gathering as “significant” and said he was “spiritually” present.
He expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting its “theological and ecclesial depth.” The Pope expressed his hope that the conference would foster a renewed awareness of “walking together,” noting that authentic synodality requires listening to and involving all the baptized according to their vocation. At the same time, he emphasized that this must be balanced with the authority given by Christ to the College of Bishops, headed by the Successor of Peter.
