Visakhapatnam: The Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy, Visakhapatnam Province, joyfully commemorated their 375th year of foundation, marking a remarkable journey of faith, service, and compassion that began in Le Puy, France, on October 15, 1650. The congregation, founded by Fr. Jean Pierre Médaille, SJ, along with six devoted women, celebrated this Terquasquicentennial Jubilee with deep gratitude and reverence at their Provincial House in Convent Junction, Gnanapuram.
The solemn Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by His Eminence Cardinal Poola Anthony, Archbishop of Hyderabad, concelebrated by His Excellency Udumala Bala, Archbishop of Visakhapatnam, and His Excellency M. In his homily, Cardinal Poola Anthony commended the Sisters for their enduring mission of faith and service, praising their relentless dedication to the poor, the marginalized, and the voiceless. He emphasized that their 375-year journey stood as “a living testimony to the Gospel in action,” and a shining example of how love and humility can transform communities.
Archbishop Udumala Bala, in his message, applauded the Sisters for their “unwavering devotion and tireless spirit of compassion,” noting that their ministry continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration. “The Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy have built lives and nurtured souls through education, healthcare, and social service. Their commitment radiates the light of Christ wherever they serve,” he said.
The congregation’s legacy of service extends across continents, with missions that span education, healthcare, social welfare, and pastoral care. From rural villages in India to communities in Europe, Africa, and beyond, the Sisters have faithfully lived their charism of unity, simplicity, and love of neighbor. Their initiatives have empowered thousands, particularly women and children, through holistic education and human development programs.
As part of the jubilee observance, the celebration featured thanksgiving prayers, cultural tributes, and messages of felicitation from collaborators and beneficiaries of the Sisters’ ministries. Each testimony echoed a deep sense of gratitude for their transformative presence and tireless service.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to all who shared in the jubilee celebration. The closing hymn, sung in unison by the assembled congregation, symbolized the unity and grace that have sustained the Sisters through centuries of service.
