Catholic Congress Launches Rights Protection Journey in Panathur; Bishops Issue Strong Messages to Government

Kochi: The long-awaited rights protection journey under the leadership of the Catholic Congress commenced today at Panathur, drawing thousands of faithful who gathered to seek divine blessings and stand in solidarity for social justice. Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany officially inaugurated the march with fervent prayers and a resolute call for action.

“The fact that the Church had to intervene to ensure that teachers received their rightful dues reflects the diminishing regard for public service under the Left administration. Yet, the government deserves credit for accepting the demands of the people, including the Church, in this matter. Even amid opposition from many quarters, including cabinet ministers, the Chief Minister maintained his stance. Likewise, the revision of the Wildlife Act, though its execution remains uncertain, was a commendable step. I am prepared to face imprisonment if necessary to defend the rights of farmers, hill communities, and ordinary citizens,” Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany asserted.

Meanwhile, Bishop Mar Remigiose, who formally flagged off the journey, emphasized the urgency of protecting traditional and local rights. Mar Inchananiyil issued a stern admonition to the government: “The immediate restoration of revenue rights to the Munambam people is non-negotiable. The JB Koshy Commission report must be published before our journey reaches Thiruvananthapuram, ensuring transparency and justice for those affected.”

The rights protection journey, stretching across several districts, symbolizes a unified call for the safeguarding of social, economic, and environmental rights. Participants from various parishes and civic groups expressed determination to highlight grievances, ranging from educational delays to land and resource rights, while maintaining a spirit of peaceful protest.

Organizers emphasized that this movement is not merely political but rooted in moral and social responsibility. By combining prayer, advocacy, and public engagement, the Catholic Congress aims to hold the administration accountable while reinforcing community solidarity.

As the march progresses, leaders have vowed to continue pressing for reforms, particularly in education, wildlife preservation, and the restoration of local entitlements. The journey is expected to reach Thiruvananthapuram in the coming days, where it will culminate in a significant public gathering designed to amplify the voices of the marginalized.
