German Business Group Urges Strategic Shift in Africa Policy

Berlin: A leading German business association is calling for a decisive change in Germany’s approach to Africa, urging policymakers to treat the continent as a key strategic partner rather than just a source of raw materials.

The Sub-Saharan Africa Initiative of German Business (SAFRI) highlighted the need for Germany to strengthen partnerships with African nations to secure critical resources such as lithium, copper, and cobalt. These materials are essential for Germany’s industrial transformation and reducing dependency on major suppliers like China, which currently provides about half of the country’s lithium battery supply.

SAFRI also emphasized the importance of diversifying supply chains to protect Germany’s economy from geopolitical risks. Strengthening trade relations through the African Continental Free Trade Area and EU economic agreements was recommended as a way to foster deeper economic ties and mutual growth opportunities.

Thomas Schaefer, SAFRI’s chairman, stressed that immediate action is necessary, noting that Africa holds significant potential for long-term economic resilience and development. The call reflects a broader acknowledgment of the continent’s growing role in global economic strategy.

This push for a more strategic and partnership-oriented Africa policy comes as Germany seeks to secure resources and new growth areas while navigating shifting global economic dynamics.
