Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Erupts, Spewing Ash 10 Kilometers Into Sky

Maumere: Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted early on October 15, 2025, sending a towering column of volcanic ash 10 kilometers into the atmosphere. The eruption lasted about nine minutes and was preceded by a smaller eruption two hours earlier, which sent ash up to nine kilometers high.

In response, the Indonesian Geological Agency raised the alert level to its highest setting and urged residents living within a 6–7 kilometer radius of the volcano to evacuate. Authorities warned of the risk of volcanic mudflows, particularly if heavy rain occurs.

The nearby Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere has been closed until Thursday, disrupting air travel in the region. This latest eruption follows a major event in November 2024, which caused 10 deaths and forced the evacuation of thousands of people.

Officials continue to monitor the volcano closely and are preparing for potential further eruptions, emphasizing the importance of community readiness and safety measures.
