Beijing: China is turning its humanoid robot competitions into something much bigger than a sporting event. What began about a decade ago as relatively small technology contests has developed into a major national showcase for robotics, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. The latest World Humanoid Robot Games, which opened in Beijing on Saturday, show how quickly China’s ambitions in the field have grown.
The second edition of the games is taking place from August 22 to August 26, bringing together hundreds of teams and more than 2,000 humanoid robots from countries around the world. The robots are competing in activities that include running, football, boxing and other physical challenges. There are also events designed to test how well machines can perform practical tasks similar to work in factories, shops and other real world environments.
The change in the nature of the competition is significant. In the early years, robot competitions were mainly about demonstrating that machines could walk, move or perform simple programmed actions. Today, the focus is increasingly on speed, balance, coordination, decision making and the ability to handle objects. These are the skills that will determine whether humanoid robots can eventually become useful workers rather than simply impressive machines at technology exhibitions.
The games are being held at a time when China’s robotics industry is expanding rapidly. The country has developed a strong manufacturing base for motors, batteries, sensors, electronic components and other technologies needed to build robots. Government support and investment have also helped companies move quickly from research laboratories to commercial production.
The World Robot Conference in Beijing has provided another major display of this progress. More than 300 companies have presented thousands of exhibits, including humanoid robots designed for factories, warehouses, homes and public services. Some machines have demonstrated their ability to sort parcels, pack products, move objects and perform household activities.
These demonstrations highlight the direction of the industry. The biggest question facing robot manufacturers is no longer whether a machine can perform an impressive stunt. The more important question is whether it can perform useful work repeatedly, safely and at a cost that makes economic sense.
Chinese companies are also attracting major financial attention. Unitree Robotics, one of the country's best known humanoid robot manufacturers, made a dramatic debut on the Shanghai Stock Exchange this week. Its shares surged sharply during their first trading session, reflecting the enormous investor interest surrounding the robotics sector.
The company has also become an important example of China's growing ability to sell robots outside its domestic market. Its overseas business shows that Chinese manufacturers are increasingly looking beyond China as they search for new customers and markets.
Other companies are following a similar path. Chery’s robotics subsidiary AiMOGA is preparing for possible future expansion and has already deployed thousands of robots, including a significant number outside China. Chinese manufacturers are showing growing interest in markets in Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
However, the rapid progress does not mean humanoid robots are ready to replace human workers on a large scale. Significant challenges remain. Robots still struggle with unpredictable situations, complex environments, battery limitations, high production costs and the need for better artificial intelligence.
A robot can be trained to complete a specific task in a controlled environment, but working alongside humans in a busy factory or operating inside an ordinary home is much more complicated. Machines need to understand their surroundings, react to unexpected events and make decisions without constant human supervision.
This is where embodied artificial intelligence becomes particularly important. Future humanoid robots will need to combine physical movement with advanced intelligence so they can understand the world around them and respond appropriately.
China's robot games therefore offer a glimpse of both the progress and the remaining difficulties. The machines may be running faster, moving more naturally and handling increasingly complicated tasks, but the real test will come when companies have to prove that these robots can create genuine economic value.
For China, the stakes are high. Robotics brings together artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, batteries, electronics and automation, all areas considered important for the country's future economy. If Chinese companies can produce reliable humanoid robots at affordable prices and deploy them in large numbers, the technology could transform factories and many service industries.
The robot games may look like entertainment, but behind the races and competitions lies a much more serious industrial ambition. China is trying to turn robotics from an exciting technological experiment into a major commercial industry. The coming years will show whether the country can make that difficult transition from spectacular demonstrations to machines that can work reliably in the real world.
