Programme emphasizes pastoral responsibility, canonical awareness, and servant leadership
Benaulim: The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) successfully conducted the 6th Batch of Diocesan Administration Training for Vicars General and Chancellors at Shanti Sadan, Benaulim, from October 14 to 18, focusing on holistic formation for effective diocesan governance.
The week-long programme brought together 21 participants from 15 dioceses across the country. It aimed to deepen their understanding of pastoral care, canonical responsibilities, and spiritual stewardship key elements for building collaborative and transparent diocesan administration.
The training began with a solemn Eucharistic Celebration led by Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, Archbishop of Goa and Daman and President of the CCBI. In his keynote address titled “Administration as a Ministry of Relationship,” the Cardinal highlighted that Church administration must always be rooted in love and service.
“True leadership in the Church,” he said, “is not about authority but about relationship. Every diocesan leader must embody the shepherd’s care, the steward’s responsibility, and the servant’s humility.” He urged participants to view administrative tasks not as bureaucratic obligations but as opportunities to nurture communion within the Church.
Throughout the training, participants engaged in interactive sessions and workshops led by Fr. Christopher Vimalraj Hiruthya, Associate Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI, and other resource persons. Topics included Canon Law and diocesan administration, pastoral planning, financial transparency, and the spiritual dimension of leadership.
Discussions centered on how diocesan leaders can effectively implement canonical norms while fostering a pastoral environment of compassion and integrity. Participants also shared experiences and best practices from their respective dioceses, enriching the collaborative learning atmosphere.
As part of the formation programme, participants embarked on a spiritual pilgrimage to significant heritage churches of Goa, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Sé Cathedral, and St. Joseph Vaz Church. These visits served as moments of prayer and reflection on the Church’s enduring mission in India and the legacy of faith built by missionary saints and pioneers.
The training concluded with a thanksgiving Eucharist, followed by reflections and closing remarks that emphasized the call to servant leadership in diocesan life. Participants were reminded that effective administration flows from a spirit of collaboration, transparency, and deep communion with Christ.
The Diocesan Administration Training Programme, now in its sixth edition, continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening the administrative and pastoral efficiency of the Church in India. Through such initiatives, the CCBI reaffirms its mission to form leaders who combine spiritual depth with practical wisdom serving the People of God with fidelity and compassion.
