Belarus Extends Diplomatic Outreach to EU Amid Thaw with U.S.

Paris: In a notable shift in its foreign policy, Belarus has initiated diplomatic outreach to European Union countries, signaling a potential move to reduce its international isolation. This development follows a warming of relations with the United States under President Donald Trump, who has engaged with Belarus through high-level visits and diplomatic gestures.

Yuri Ambrazevich, Belarus's ambassador to the Vatican since March, has been designated as the country's envoy to Western Europe. Operating from Rome, Ambrazevich has been actively engaging with European diplomats, conveying Belarus's interest in mediating the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and participating in European security dialogues. His efforts include organizing meetings with ambassadors in Paris, aiming to foster direct communication and collaboration.

This outreach is perceived as part of a broader strategy by Belarus to leverage its improved relations with the U.S. to re-engage with Europe. The recent release of over 50 political prisoners and the easing of sanctions on Belarus's state airline, Belavia, have been interpreted as steps towards normalization. However, European diplomats remain cautious, citing Belarus's continued support for Russia and suppression of domestic opposition as significant concerns.

Leaders of the exiled Belarusian opposition, including Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, have expressed skepticism about the sincerity of Belarus's overtures. They argue that meaningful democratic reforms are necessary before any sanctions relief or diplomatic engagement can be considered. The Baltic states, in particular, have been vocal in their opposition to easing sanctions, especially those affecting Belarus's potash exports and access to Baltic ports.

While some European countries have agreed to meet with Ambrazevich, the overall response remains tepid. Many diplomats view Belarus's actions as a calculated move to exploit the current geopolitical climate rather than a genuine commitment to change. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether Belarus's diplomatic efforts translate into substantive shifts in its relations with the European Union.
