‘It Is India AND China’: UK and German Envoys Highlight Strategic Importance in Global Trade

New Delhi: In a world where trade routes and supply chains are increasingly fragile, top diplomatic voices from the United Kingdom and Germany underscored the dual significance of India and China as linchpins in global commerce. Speaking at a major international forum on Friday, British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron and German Envoy Dr. Philipp Ackermann emphasized that both nations are indispensable to international trade, particularly amid mounting geopolitical turbulence.

Cameron acknowledged China's substantial global influence but pointedly stressed that India’s role is growing rapidly. “While China holds weight in the global economy, India will be more important in shaping the future of trade,” she remarked. Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Ackermann clarified, “It is not either/or… it is India AND China,” highlighting the need for a balanced engagement with both Asian giants.

The diplomats’ remarks come amid a period of heightened uncertainty in global supply chains, disrupted by conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, as well as protectionist trade policies emanating from Washington. The United States, under President Donald Trump, has imposed a 50% tariff on India, including a 25% ‘penalty’ tied to Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil. Trump has repeatedly criticized India’s energy dealings with Moscow, arguing they indirectly fund the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Beijing faces the threat of a 100% tariff from the US, sparking concerns over an escalating trade confrontation between the world’s two largest economies. China has responded with a stern warning, stating, “If the US continues on its wrong course, China will firmly take necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”

The dual pressures of tariffs and geopolitical instability have triggered a notable realignment in Asia’s economic landscape. Historically divergent partners Russia, India, and China are now openly exploring deeper trade and economic collaborations, signaling a potential shift in regional dynamics and the emergence of new trade corridors beyond traditional Western influence.

Highlighting the critical lesson from these developments, both envoys stressed the importance of diversifying trade partnerships. “None of us wants to be dependent on a single country,” Cameron remarked, underscoring the strategic imperative for nations to hedge against risks in an increasingly volatile global economy.

As India and China navigate the challenges and opportunities of the 21st-century trade landscape, their combined influence is expected to shape not only Asian markets but the trajectory of global commerce for decades to come.
