Hyderabad Witnesses Launch of “The Green Ten Commandments” Inspired by Laudato Si’

Hyderabad: A landmark literary event unfolded at the Don Bosco Provincial House in Hyderabad on October 15, as fifty prominent leaders and dignitaries gathered to witness the release of The Green Ten Commandments, a thought-provoking book authored by Fr. Joshtrom Isaac Kureethadam, SDB. The publication, aimed at raising awareness about ecological stewardship, draws deeply from Pope Francis’s encyclicals Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum.

The book opens with insightful messages from Cardinal Filipe Neri of Goa and Cardinal Poola Anthony of Hyderabad. Cardinal Neri highlighted the unique approach of the work, stating, “In this ‘Green Ten Commandments’, titled Pachani Padhi Agnalu in Telugu, essential teachings from both Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum have been thoughtfully woven together. Fr. Kureethadam has distilled the profound wisdom of these encyclicals into a form accessible to all.”

Echoing this sentiment, Cardinal Anthony drew a compelling parallel to biblical history: “Just as God delivered the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai to guide humanity morally, today through Fr. Joshtrom Isaac Kureethadam, our ‘modern-day Moses’—we receive these ‘Green Ten Commandments’ to safeguard our fragile, breathless planet and all its life forms.”

Fr. Kureethadam, currently Chair of the Philosophy of Science Department and Director of the Institute of Social and Political Sciences at the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome, has long been recognized for his work on creation care and ecological theology. His latest book seeks to translate these high-level theological principles into practical guidance for everyday environmental responsibility.

Presiding over the occasion was Fr. Biju Michael, SDB, Regional Councilor for South Asia, while Fr. Thomas Santiagu, SDB, Provincial, delivered the keynote address emphasizing the Church’s role in promoting environmental consciousness. The event’s seamless coordination was credited to Fr. Yeruva Joji Reddy, SDB, while translator Mr. M.D. Vincent received special recognition for bringing the work to a wider audience.

Attendees described the launch as “an inspiring convergence of faith, intellect, and ecological responsibility,” marking a significant step in the Church’s ongoing effort to promote sustainable living through the lens of spiritual and moral guidance.
