At least 35 killed in fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria’s Niger State

Bida: At least 35 people have died after a fuel tanker overturned and exploded in Niger State, northern Nigeria, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred on October 21 when the tanker skidded off the road and spilled petrol, which ignited shortly after the crash.

The explosion happened in the Bida area as local residents rushed to collect leaking fuel. Seventeen others were injured and have been hospitalized.

Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident and identify the driver and owner of the tanker.

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and warned against the dangerous practice of fuel scavenging, which has become more common following rising fuel costs after the government removed subsidies. A similar fuel tanker accident earlier this year killed at least 98 people in the state.

Authorities have linked the rise in such accidents to poor road conditions and the lack of a functional rail network, which has turned Niger State into a major transit hub. The incident underscores ongoing safety challenges surrounding fuel transportation in the region.
