Busoga region mourns death of Bishop Martin Wamika

Jinja:  The Busoga region is grieving the loss of Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika, the first Ugandan bishop of Jinja Diocese, who passed away on Wednesday at Rubaga Hospital in Kampala at the age of 72.

Bishop Wamika had been battling prostate cancer and other age-related complications. He had recently traveled to India for treatment, but his condition worsened after returning to Uganda.

Born on August 12, 1953, in Namengo, Budaka District, Bishop Wamika was ordained a priest in 1979 and later became a key figure in the Jinja Diocese, succeeding Rt. Rev. Joseph Willigers. He was known for his humility, leadership, and commitment to the development of the Church and the wider community.

Community members expressed their sorrow over his death. Michael Kifubangabo, from St. Fatima Jinja Parish, described it as “a big blow to the people of Busoga,” recalling the bishop’s role in presiding over important spiritual milestones, including Kifubangabo’s wedding in Israel.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but tributes continue to pour in, reflecting Bishop Wamika’s lasting impact on the Catholic community and his legacy of service.
