UN Secretary-General warns no country is safe from climate disasters

New York : United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning that no nation is immune to the devastating impacts of climate-related disasters. Speaking at a meeting with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Guterres emphasized the urgent need to expand early warning systems worldwide to protect lives and economies.

Guterres stressed that accurate forecasting is essential to prepare countries for impending disasters. He called for immediate global action to implement comprehensive early warning mechanisms, ensuring that communities receive timely alerts to minimize loss and damage.

During the meeting, the UN chief also highlighted the critical role of science and meteorology in disaster prevention. He praised the WMO for its efforts in saving lives through effective weather forecasting and early warnings.

Guterres urged scientists to continue their vital work despite growing anti-science sentiments in some countries, including the United States.

In addition to disaster preparedness, Guterres underscored the urgency of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. He urged nations to submit ambitious climate action plans ahead of the upcoming COP30 conference in Brazil, warning that current efforts fall short of meeting this crucial target.

Guterres’ message serves as a reminder that climate change is a global threat requiring coordinated action, scientific innovation, and strong political commitment to protect the world’s most vulnerable communities.
