Russia unveils chilling new era of warfare with nuclear-powered underwater drone Poseidon

Moscow: Russia has announced the successful test of its nuclear-powered underwater drone, Poseidon, marking a major milestone in the country’s strategic weapons program. President Vladimir Putin confirmed that the test included activation of the drone’s nuclear propulsion system, which allows it to travel vast distances underwater without surfacing.

The Poseidon, also known by its earlier code name “Status-6,” is designed to operate as an autonomous underwater vehicle capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. According to Russian defense officials, the drone can travel at very high speeds and dive to extreme depths, making it difficult to detect or intercept.

Reports suggest that the test was conducted from a modified Belgorod-class submarine, believed to be capable of carrying up to six Poseidon drones. Putin claimed the weapon’s power “significantly exceeds” that of Russia’s newest intercontinental ballistic missiles, describing it as a critical part of the country’s modern nuclear deterrent.

First revealed publicly in 2018, Poseidon has been portrayed by Moscow as a new strategic system meant to ensure Russia’s ability to respond to any nuclear threat. It is said to be able to strike coastal cities or military bases, potentially creating massive underwater shockwaves. Western analysts, however, caution that claims about its so-called “tsunami effect” are likely exaggerated and primarily aimed at psychological deterrence.

The United States and NATO have expressed concern about the weapon’s potential impact on global stability. Military experts warn that such autonomous nuclear-powered systems pose serious risks, including difficulties in control, communication, and accident prevention.

While Russia has not disclosed full details of the test or the operational readiness of Poseidon, the announcement is viewed as part of a broader effort to showcase its advancing military technology amid heightened tensions with the West.

The weapon, if deployed, would add a new dimension to the global nuclear balance, challenging existing arms control frameworks and prompting other nations to reassess their underwater defense capabilities.
