Indian Air Force plans to develop cargo drones for remote areas

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning to develop new cargo drones to improve transportation and logistics in remote and difficult-to-reach areas such as the Lakshadweep islands. The project aims to use unmanned aerial systems capable of carrying heavy loads over long distances, reducing the dependence on helicopters and traditional transport methods.

According to recent reports, the proposed drones are expected to carry up to 500 kilograms of cargo and cover distances of nearly 500 kilometers with an endurance of around five hours. These drones are expected to help the Air Force transport essential goods, equipment, and medical supplies to regions where weather and geography make regular transport difficult.

The Air Force is working with Indian industries and startups to design and produce these drones under its push for indigenous defense technologies. The initiative builds on the success of earlier innovation programs like the Meher Baba drone competition, which encouraged local development in unmanned systems.

Officials say that these drones will especially benefit island territories such as Lakshadweep, where rough seas and unpredictable weather often disrupt supply lines. The IAF is exploring fixed-wing drones with vertical take-off and landing abilities, allowing them to operate in limited spaces and on small airstrips.

India’s growing drone industry has already achieved progress in hybrid and heavy-lift drone technology. The project is expected to further strengthen India’s logistics network, improve defense preparedness, and support the country’s “Make in India” initiative by boosting domestic manufacturing and innovation in advanced aerospace systems.

Industry experts believe the program could transform logistics not only for defense but also for humanitarian and disaster-relief operations in the future.
