Through, With and in Africa; A Journey Across Regions, Culture; Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), located in the heart of Central Africa, is a land of immense natural wealth, cultural richness, and untapped potential. Despite its complex history, the DRC remains one of Africa’s most fascinating countries, offering a unique blend of tradition, resilience, and opportunity.

Despite its central location, the DRC shares borders with four EAC member states: Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan. This geographic proximity, along with strong historical, cultural, and economic ties, made EAC membership a strategic move.

The DRC is endowed with vast mineral resources, including cobalt, copper, diamonds, gold, and coltan, making it one of the richest countries in natural resources globally. Cobalt, in particular, is vital for the global tech and electric vehicle industries, and the DRC supplies over 70% of the world’s demand.

Agriculture also plays a significant role, employing the majority of the population. However, despite its resource wealth, the country faces challenges such as infrastructure deficits, political instability, and limited industrialization. Recent reforms and international partnerships aim to harness its economic potential more sustainably and equitably.

Home to over 200 ethnic groups, the DRC is a cultural mosaic. The Bantu-speaking peoples form the majority, with prominent groups like the Luba, Kongo, and Mongo. Each group contributes to the country’s vibrant traditions in music, dance, storytelling, and art.

Congolese rumba, a genre that blends African rhythms with Cuban influences, is internationally celebrated and was recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Traditional ceremonies, colorful attire, and oral histories continue to play a vital role in community life.

Religion is deeply woven into the fabric of Congolese society. Approximately 95% of the population identifies as Christian, with Roman Catholicism and Protestantism being the dominant denominations. There is also a significant presence of Kimbanguism, a Christian-inspired indigenous movement founded in the early 20th century.

Islam, traditional African religions, and other faiths are also practiced, often blending spiritual beliefs with local customs and rituals.

Though still developing its tourism infrastructure, the DRC offers breathtaking natural attractions for adventurous travelers. Highlights include:

Virunga National Park – Africa’s oldest national park, home to endangered mountain gorillas and active volcanoes like Mount Nyiragongo.

• Congo River – The second-longest river in Africa, vital for transport and rich in biodiversity.

• Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary – A refuge for orphaned bonobos, one of humanity’s closest relatives.

• Boyoma Falls and Lake Kivu – Scenic spots offering a glimpse into the country’s natural splendor.

Tourism remains a promising sector, with potential to boost conservation and community development.

The Indian community in the DRC, though small, has had a notable presence, especially in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. Many Indians are engaged in trade, retail, hospitality, and manufacturing, contributing to the local economy.

Cultural ties are maintained through Indian associations, temples, and festivals like Diwali and Holi, which are celebrated within the community. The Indian diaspora also plays a role in fostering bilateral relations between India and the DRC.

There is also a small Kerala Community under the Association name of Kera DRC celebrating Onam and other Kerala celebrations. Mr. Baby Pallippadan from Thrissur is the CFO of the leading Bank in DRC - Raw Bank, who is celebrating his 30th year in DRC; he is the Country coordinator for Catholic Congress Global as well as Cnewslive in DRC.
