Thick smog covers Delhi as air quality reaches severe levels

New Delhi:  A thick blanket of smog has covered the national capital once again, causing the air quality to drop to “very poor” and “severe” levels. The haze has reduced visibility so much that landmarks such as India Gate are barely visible, raising serious health and safety concerns for residents.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was around 370, while several areas, including Anand Vihar, RK Puram, and AIIMS, recorded readings above 400, indicating “severe” air pollution. Experts warned that these levels can cause breathing problems, throat irritation, and eye discomfort, especially among children, the elderly, and people with respiratory issues.

Weather officials said calm winds and lower temperatures have trapped pollutants close to the ground, worsening the smog. Emissions from vehicles, dust from construction sites, and smoke from crop residue burning in nearby states are also adding to the pollution.

The Supreme Court has asked the Commission for Air Quality Management and the Central Pollution Control Board to provide a detailed report on the measures being taken to control the situation. Authorities have been sprinkling water on roads, restricting construction activities, and advising citizens to limit outdoor exercise.

Medical professionals have urged residents to stay indoors as much as possible, use air purifiers, and wear protective masks when stepping outside. They have also advised schools and offices to consider flexible timings to reduce exposure during peak pollution hours.

As the smog continues to linger, Delhi’s skies remain grey and heavy, reminding the city of the urgent need for consistent and effective action to ensure cleaner and safer air for all.
