Barcelona: The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona has officially become the tallest church in the world after reaching a height of 162.91 meters. This milestone was achieved following the installation of a new section on the central Tower of Jesus Christ on October 30, 2025. The structure has now surpassed Germany’s Ulmer Munster, which previously held the record at 161.53 meters.
According to project officials, the tower will reach its final height of about 172 meters once the crowning cross is installed, making it not only the tallest church but also one of the tallest religious buildings in the world.
The construction of the Sagrada Familia began in 1882 and was later redesigned by the famous architect Antoni Gaudi, whose unique vision has made the basilica an architectural symbol of Barcelona. Though the church remains unfinished, this achievement marks a major step toward completing one of the world’s longest-running building projects.
Gaudi had carefully chosen the height of the structure so that it would remain slightly lower than Barcelona’s Montjuic Hill, reflecting his belief that human creations should not exceed the work of God.
The basilica’s construction is largely funded through visitor donations and ticket sales, with millions of tourists contributing each year. The new milestone is expected to attract even more visitors, boosting tourism and helping to fund the final stages of construction.
The Sagrada Familia’s completion has long been linked to the centenary of Gaudi’s death in 2026. While major structural work is nearing its end, decorative and artistic details are expected to continue for several more years, possibly into the 2030s.
This achievement is not only a triumph of architecture but also a symbol of perseverance and faith. The Sagrada Familia now stands as a global landmark, representing both the genius of Gaudi and the enduring spirit of Barcelona.
