China Urges Netherlands to Take Action Amid Nexperia Dispute

Beijing: China has called on the Dutch government to take decisive measures to resolve the ongoing crisis surrounding semiconductor manufacturer Nexperia, warning that delays could have far-reaching consequences for global supply chains. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce emphasized the urgency of concrete action following weeks of diplomatic engagement, highlighting the potential disruption to Europe’s automotive and technology sectors.

The dispute centers on Nexperia, a Netherlands-based chip manufacturer owned by Chinese firm Wingtech Technology Co., Ltd. Dutch authorities intervened on September 30, citing concerns that Nexperia would move production operations from Europe to China. In response, China imposed export restrictions on the company’s finished semiconductor chips on October 4, a move that prompted concerns over potential shortages in critical industries, particularly automobile manufacturing across the continent.

Beijing has confirmed that Dutch officials are scheduled to hold high-level talks in China aimed at resolving the conflict. In its statement, the Ministry of Commerce welcomed the negotiations but stressed that progress on paper must be followed by tangible steps to address the operational restrictions. “We hope the Netherlands will take concrete actions to resolve the crisis promptly,” the ministry said.

Dutch authorities have acknowledged the ongoing discussions but remain cautious about releasing details. A spokesperson for the Netherlands’ Ministry of Economic Affairs stated, “We are conducting constructive talks with China and will take appropriate measures as necessary. At this stage, we cannot comment on the content of these discussions.”

Industry analysts warn that the Nexperia dispute underscores the growing intersection of national security, trade policy, and semiconductor supply chains. As Chinese-owned firms operate critical facilities abroad, host countries face complex decisions between maintaining open markets and protecting strategic infrastructure. The standoff highlights the delicate balance Europe must navigate amid global technology competition.

China’s handling of the Nexperia situation also reflects broader geopolitical considerations. Earlier this year, Beijing agreed to provide case-by-case exemptions for automotive manufacturers affected by export restrictions following a deal with the United States. The current dispute with the Netherlands serves as another test of China’s technology diplomacy and its ability to secure favorable outcomes without triggering retaliatory measures.

As talks proceed, the international community is closely monitoring the situation. Any failure to reach a resolution could have ripple effects across European industries reliant on semiconductors, intensifying concerns over supply chain resilience and prompting further international scrutiny of China-EU trade relations.
