Delhi air remains very poor despite slight improvement, GRAP 3 still on hold

New Delhi: The air quality in the national capital showed a slight improvement on Monday, but it still remained in the “very poor” category, making the city’s air unsafe to breathe. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 346 early in the morning, compared to nearly 391 the previous day.

Several parts of the city continued to record higher pollution levels. Bawana registered an AQI of 412, Wazirpur recorded 397, Jahangirpuri 394, and Nehru Nagar 386. Thick smog continued to hang over the city, reducing visibility and leaving residents struggling with cough, irritation, and breathing problems.

Despite the poor air, authorities have not yet enforced Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which would involve stricter curbs such as a ban on non-essential construction and restrictions on vehicle use. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said the decision to hold back the next stage was based on meteorological conditions, which currently show some potential for slight improvement in air dispersion.

Experts say the smog is a result of several factors including vehicle emissions, dust, and smoke from stubble burning in neighboring states. A fall in temperature and weak wind movement have worsened the situation by trapping pollutants near the surface.

Weather officials said the city recorded a morning temperature of around 11.6 degrees Celsius, and the low ventilation index made it difficult for pollutants to disperse. The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology forecast suggests that poor air quality will likely continue over the next few days unless strong winds or rainfall help clear the atmosphere.

Health experts have urged residents, especially children and the elderly, to avoid outdoor activities and wear masks when stepping out. They also recommend using air purifiers indoors and keeping windows closed during the early morning and evening hours when pollution levels are at their peak.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and if pollution levels remain high, the government may consider implementing GRAP Stage 3 restrictions in the coming days. However, for now, Delhi continues to battle toxic air as smog lingers over the city.
