New Delhi: A powerful explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi on Monday evening left at least eight people dead and several others injured, triggering panic and leading authorities to issue a high alert across the capital. The blast occurred near Gate No. 1 of the metro station, close to the historic Red Fort, and caused multiple vehicles to catch fire.
According to officials, the explosion took place inside a parked car around 6:30 p.m. Witnesses said they heard a loud bang followed by flames and thick black smoke rising from the area.
Firefighters and emergency teams rushed to the scene, with seven fire tenders deployed to control the blaze. Several nearby vehicles were completely gutted in the fire.
Delhi Police confirmed that eight people were killed in the explosion, while others sustained serious injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released as authorities continue contacting their families.
The cause of the blast remains under investigation. Forensic experts and bomb disposal squads are examining the wreckage to determine whether it was an accidental fire, a mechanical fault, or a deliberate act. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of foul play.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as police cordoned off the area and evacuated people from surrounding buildings. Metro services at Red Fort Station were temporarily suspended as a safety measure. Heavy police deployment was seen across the area, and traffic restrictions were imposed near the blast site.
Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora stated that all angles are being investigated. “We are reviewing CCTV footage and collecting forensic samples. The situation is under control, and people are advised to remain calm,” he said.
The incident has raised fresh security concerns in central Delhi, especially given the proximity to a major heritage monument and a busy public transit point. Authorities have intensified checks at key entry points to the city and increased patrols in sensitive areas.
This explosion comes at a time when Delhi was already on heightened alert following the recent seizure of explosive materials in the region. Security agencies are now working together to determine whether there is any connection between the two incidents.
Officials have urged citizens to avoid speculation and cooperate with the investigation. Further updates on the cause of the explosion and the condition of the injured are expected once the forensic team submits its report.
