New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the former King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and appreciated his lifelong contribution to strengthening the friendship between India and Bhutan. The meeting took place during Modi’s official visit to Bhutan, where he also participated in several events marking the 70th birthday of the former monarch.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to the former King for his vision and leadership that helped build the deep trust and cooperation shared by both countries. He also conveyed his best wishes for the King’s good health and happiness. The two leaders discussed various areas of cooperation, including energy, trade, technology, and connectivity.

As part of the visit, India extended a line of credit worth around 455 million US dollars to support Bhutan’s ongoing development and energy projects. Modi and Bhutanese leaders also inaugurated the 1,020 megawatt Punatsangchhu II hydroelectric project, which was built with Indian assistance. The discussions also covered new areas of partnership such as digital technology, cultural exchange, and cross-border connectivity. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to work together on sustainable development and environmental protection, keeping in mind Bhutan’s focus on Gross National Happiness.

The visit underlined India’s Neighborhood First policy and its continuing support for Bhutan’s progress. Modi also praised Bhutan’s efforts in promoting peace, spirituality, and sustainable growth in the Himalayan region.

Observers noted that the meeting with the former King carried strong symbolic meaning, as it reflected the continuity of trust between the two nations built over decades of cooperation. Bhutan’s former King, who played a major role in shaping the country’s democratic transition, continues to be a respected figure in strengthening India-Bhutan relations.

With new energy projects, cultural partnerships, and connectivity plans, the visit marked another milestone in the enduring friendship between India and Bhutan.
