US bishops express solidarity with immigrants and call for reform

Vatican City: The Catholic Bishops of the United States have issued a rare “Special Message” on immigration, assuring immigrants that the Church stands with them and urging the nation to pursue meaningful reform of its immigration system.

Released during the U.S. Bishops’ Conference plenary assembly, the message reflects what Church leaders described as an “urgent” need to speak together as a united body. It is the first statement of its kind since 2013 and was approved with overwhelming support, receiving nearly 97 percent of votes from the bishops present.

In the message, the bishops address immigrants directly, telling them, “We stand with you in your suffering.” They express deep concern about the “climate of fear and anxiety” many immigrants face, citing hostile rhetoric, conditions in detention centers and limited access to pastoral care. They warn against the “vilification” of immigrants and emphasize the need to defend the God given dignity of every person.

The bishops stress that caring for immigrants does not conflict with national security, saying both can be achieved “if people of good will work together.” They highlight the importance of expanding safe and legal pathways to reduce the risks of trafficking and exploitation, while recognizing the responsibility of countries to manage their borders in an orderly and just way.

The message also rejects indiscriminate mass deportations and any form of dehumanizing language or violence directed at immigrants or law enforcement officials.

Grounding their appeal in Catholic teaching, the bishops point to the biblical call to care for the vulnerable, including widows, orphans, the poor and strangers. They note that the Church’s concern for immigrants is rooted in the command to love others as Christ loves.

The bishops reaffirmed their commitment to advocate for comprehensive immigration reform and encouraged the faithful to continue supporting migrants in their communities. The full message is available on the website of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
