Pakistan says ties with Afghanistan stuck as talks fail to ease tensions

Islamabad:  Pakistan has said its relationship with Afghanistan has reached a stalemate after the latest round of talks between the two sides ended without any progress. The discussions, held in Istanbul earlier this month with support from Turkey and Qatar, were aimed at reducing border tensions and addressing Pakistan’s concerns about militant groups operating from Afghan territory.

Officials in Islamabad said the Afghan side showed no willingness to accept Pakistan’s demand for stronger action against groups such as the Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan. Pakistan argues that these groups use Afghan soil to plan attacks across the border. Afghan authorities reject these accusations and say Pakistan’s demands interfere with their sovereignty.

The failed talks come after weeks of heightened border clashes in October, which left several people dead on both sides. A fragile ceasefire was put in place on October 19, but trust remains low. Pakistan’s defence minister has warned that the situation could worsen if no agreement is reached soon.

Trade and travel between the two neighbours have also been disrupted. Pakistan has only partially reopened the Torkham border crossing, allowing stranded Afghan refugees to return home but keeping most commercial activity suspended. Transporters, traders and families who rely on cross border movement continue to suffer due to the restrictions.

Diplomats say both countries remain far apart on how to move forward. Pakistan wants clear commitments to stop militant activities along the border, while Afghanistan insists it is doing enough and will not accept terms it sees as unfair. With no new talks planned, the stalemate is expected to continue, raising concerns about stability in the region.
