Sydney: Last week, Caritas Australia’s diocesan directors convened in Sydney for their annual three-day gathering, a forum dedicated to strengthening local partnerships, advancing humanitarian initiatives, and preparing for Project Compassion 2026.
Appointed collaboratively with their local archbishops or bishops, diocesan directors serve as the pivotal link between Caritas Australia and communities nationwide. Their work spans relationship-building, education, fundraising, advocacy, and engagement with Catholic schools, parishes, and the broader Church community, translating the organization’s mission into tangible action at the grassroots level.
Opening the event, Caritas Australia CEO Kirsten Sayers emphasized the indispensable contribution of diocesan directors. “Through our diocesan directors, Caritas Australia maintains a presence in every corner of the country. You are our eyes and ears, hands and feet bridging Australian communities with those in need across the globe,” Ms Sayers said. She noted that in an era marked by unprecedented levels of conflict, displacement, and hunger, the directors’ role has never been more crucial.
The program offered sessions on safeguarding, ethical storytelling, ecological conversion, and building resilient communities, alongside opportunities for collaboration, dialogue, and renewal. Directors worked closely with leaders from Caritas Australia’s programs and fundraising teams to explore strategies for deepening engagement with parishes and Catholic schools.
The gathering was also honoured by the presence of Sydney Auxiliary Bishop Danny Meagher, who reflected on the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and presided over the celebration of the Eucharist, inspiring attendees to continue their mission with renewed commitment.
Through this annual event, Caritas Australia not only celebrated the dedication of its diocesan directors but also reinforced their vital role as the heartbeat of its community-driven mission.
