India to submit updated climate targets to UN by December end, says minister

New Delhi : India will present its updated climate targets to the United Nations by the end of December, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said during the global climate summit in Brazil. The revised Nationally Determined Contribution will outline the country’s goals for the period up to 2035.

Speaking at COP30 in Belem, Yadav said India remains committed to climate action and has already made strong progress in reducing emissions. He noted that India’s emission intensity has fallen by more than one third since 2005 and that more than half of the country’s total power capacity now comes from non fossil fuel sources. This achievement came ahead of schedule.

The minister stressed that climate change is a serious and urgent challenge and called on developed countries to take the lead by reaching net zero well before their announced timelines. He also urged richer nations to provide new and concessional climate finance and to remove barriers that limit access to clean technology. According to him, finance and technology support are essential for countries like India as they expand renewable energy and adapt to extreme weather.

Yadav said the government is finalising its updated climate plan after internal reviews and Cabinet level approval. Along with the revised targets, India will soon release its first Biennial Transparency Report, which will give detailed data on the country’s emissions and progress under the Paris Agreement.

He also highlighted several national initiatives that are expected to support long term climate goals, including the green hydrogen mission and India’s nuclear energy programme.

The updated climate pledge will show how India plans to move forward in the next decade while balancing development needs and environmental responsibilities. The announcement is expected to draw close attention from global observers as India continues to play a major role in international climate negotiations.
