Dhaka: A moderate earthquake shook central Bangladesh on Friday morning, killing several people and causing damage to buildings in and around the capital Dhaka. The quake had a magnitude of about 5.7 and struck near Narsingdi district, around 30 to 40 kilometres east of Dhaka, according to early reports from seismic agencies.
Police and local officials said at least three people were confirmed dead, while some media reports put the number as high as six. Many others were injured as parts of buildings collapsed, railings gave way and people rushed out of homes and offices in panic. Rescue teams were deployed to check damaged structures and assist those hurt.
Tremors were felt across Dhaka and in neighbouring areas of India, including Kolkata and parts of West Bengal. Residents described the shaking as brief but strong, prompting thousands to evacuate buildings.
The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of about ten kilometres, which made the tremors more intense. Authorities warned that more aftershocks were possible and urged people to stay alert. Emergency response teams continued surveying damage in Narsingdi and other affected districts through the day.
Bangladesh lies in a region prone to seismic activity, and experts said the incident shows the continued need for stronger building standards and better preparedness in crowded urban areas like Dhaka.
Officials said they will provide updated casualty figures as more information becomes available.
