Dubai: An Indian Air Force Tejas fighter jet crashed during a flying display at the Dubai Air Show on Friday killing its pilot and prompting an immediate investigation by both Indian and UAE authorities.
The light combat aircraft was performing an aerobatic manoeuvre at Al Maktoum International Airport around mid afternoon when it suddenly lost height and plunged to the ground. The jet burst into flames on impact sending thick black smoke into the air as emergency teams rushed to the site.
The Indian Air Force confirmed the death of the pilot and expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Officials said a detailed court of inquiry has been ordered to determine what caused the crash. Dubai government authorities also said that firefighting and rescue teams responded within minutes but the pilot could not be saved.
Witnesses at the air show reported that the aircraft appeared to dip sharply before crashing but the exact reason remains unknown. There has been no official confirmation on whether the pilot attempted to eject from the cockpit.
The Tejas is India’s home built light combat aircraft developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. It has played an important role in India’s ongoing efforts to modernise its air fleet. The incident is expected to lead to a review of flight safety procedures for public demonstrations and may also influence the continued development and deployment of the aircraft.
No injuries were reported among spectators or other participants at the air show. The flying programme was temporarily halted as authorities secured the area and began the investigation.
