An eternal star fades: Bollywood mourns the loss of Dharmendra at 89

Mumbai: India is grieving the passing of Dharmendra, one of Bollywood’s most treasured stars, who died early this morning at his home in Mumbai at the age of 89. His gentle nature, long career and iconic screen presence made him a beloved figure across generations, and the news of his death has left the public and the film fraternity in deep sorrow.

Dharmendra had been facing health issues in recent weeks. He was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital earlier this month due to breathing difficulties and was kept under strict medical observation. He was discharged on November 12 to continue treatment at home. Surrounded by his family, he passed away peacefully.

Family members, friends and well known faces from the industry gathered at Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle to pay their last respects. Hema Malini, Esha Deol, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aamir Khan were among the many who arrived to bid farewell to the actor who touched so many lives.

Dharmendra’s career spanned more than sixty years, during which he appeared in over 300 films. He was known for his versatility, moving easily from intense action roles to gentle romantic characters and warm comic performances. His roles in films like Sholay, Satyakam, Dost, Chupke Chupke, Phool Aur Patthar, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Jugnu, Anupama, Bandini, The Burning Train and Yaadon Ki Baaraat helped shape the history of Hindi cinema.

He was last seen in the 2024 film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya and had completed work for his upcoming film Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan. The film is scheduled for release in December and features Agastya Nanda and Simar Bhatia in lead roles. This final performance has now become a treasured farewell for his fans.

As news of his death spread, tributes poured in from all directions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences and said the country had lost an artist who made a deep cultural impact. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar also expressed sadness, describing Dharmendra as a guiding force for the film fraternity.

Filmmaker Karan Johar wrote an emotional note remembering Dharmendra as a megastar with an unmatched presence and a man known for his kindness and warmth. He said the industry had lost someone who brought love and positivity wherever he went.

Punjabi actor and singer Gippy Grewal also shared a heartfelt message, calling Dharmendra a genuine and knowledgeable soul whose kindness left a lasting impression on everyone around him. He said it was painful to accept such a sudden loss.

Ajay Devgn paid tribute by calling Dharmendra an inspiring figure whose generosity and warm nature influenced generations. He said the industry had lost a legend who shaped the very soul of Indian cinema.

Actor Pulkit Samrat remembered Dharmendra as a pillar of Indian cinema. He said that while people admired Dharam ji for his heroic roles on screen, the real hero was the kind and humble man behind the camera.

Kareena Kapoor Khan joined the nation in mourning by sharing rare photographs of Dharmendra with her grandfather Raj Kapoor. She added the caption forever in power, reflecting the long lasting influence the two legends had on the film world.

Dharmendra received the Padma Bhushan in 2012 for his immense contributions to Indian cinema. His passing comes just two weeks before his 90th birthday, a milestone fans hoped he would celebrate with joy and good health.

Today, India remembers Dharmendra not only as a legendary actor but as a gentle human being whose warmth touched countless hearts. His journey, his roles and his kindness will continue to live on through the memories he created. His absence leaves a deep void, but his legacy remains bright on screen and in the hearts of millions.
