Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad has officially been selected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a historic moment as the event enters its 100th year. The selection was confirmed during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly held in Glasgow. This will be the second time India hosts the event, with the first being in New Delhi in 2010.
The 2030 edition is being called the Centenary Commonwealth Games as it marks 100 years since the first games were held in Hamilton, Canada in 1930. Officials described the decision as both symbolic and strategic as India continues to strengthen its position as a major global sports destination.
Under the new format set by Commonwealth Sport, the 2030 Games will feature between 15 and 17 sports.
The program aims to promote sustainability and reduce costs while ensuring the participation of athletes from all 74 Commonwealth member nations. Several core sports including athletics, swimming, weightlifting, table tennis, boxing, gymnastics and para events have already been confirmed.
Authorities in Gujarat have expressed confidence that the city is ready to take on the responsibility of hosting such a major international event. Major investments in infrastructure, transportation and sports facilities are expected over the coming years. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and Narendra Modi Stadium are likely to serve as key venues.
Observers say the hosting rights could also support India’s long term plan to bid for the 2036 Olympics. Ahmedabad has already been mentioned as a potential host city for that future bid.
Sports experts believe the games will boost tourism, employment and sports culture in the country while giving Indian athletes a strong home advantage.
More details about final sports, venue planning, budgets and cultural programs are expected in the coming months as preparations move forward.
The 2030 event is seen not only as a sports celebration but as a milestone for the Commonwealth Games movement and its future direction.
