Indian Carmelite priest appointed auxiliary bishop in Mainz Germany

New Delhi: Fr Joshy George Pottackal O Carm a priest from Kerala India has been appointed as the auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Mainz. Pope Leo announced the appointment earlier this week making it a historic moment because this is the first time an Indian priest has been chosen as a bishop in Germany.

The official introduction took place at Erbacher Hof in Mainz in the presence of Bishop Peter Kohlgraf. The episcopal ordination is scheduled for March 15 at Mainz Cathedral. As auxiliary bishop Fr Joshy will serve as episcopal vicar for religious orders and continue in his role at the diocesan personnel office until a new appointment is made. Along with this he will hold the title of titular bishop of Ceramussa an ancient diocese in North Africa.

Bishop Kohlgraf expressed great joy and appreciation for the new bishop elect and described him as a humble priest with deep spiritual roots. He said Fr Joshy is a man with pastoral experience compassion and the ability to work with people. He also said that his experience with the Carmelite order and his years of service in Germany will greatly help the local church.

Fr Joshy responded to the appointment with humility and surprise. Speaking at the event he said that he never imagined being called to become a bishop and added that he first thought his mission would be in North India or Africa. He shared that even after arriving in Germany his heart always remained close to pastoral mission especially among migrant communities.

He described himself as a simple priest and said he does not see himself as a great scholar. He mentioned that his sermons are short and direct and he wonders whether he can carry out this responsibility while remaining true to who he is. He said that even with these doubts he trusts in God and accepts the call with faith. He added that years of serving people taught him how important it is to stay close to their joys struggles and hopes.

Fr Joshy was born on April 30 1977 in Meenkunnam Kerala. He entered the Carmelite order as a minor seminarian in 1992 and made his first profession in 1996. After completing his studies in Thrissur and Bengaluru he was ordained a priest in 2003. He moved to Germany in 2004 and has served in various roles including youth chaplain parish priest regional superior and formation prefect.

The Diocese of Mainz and church communities in India and Germany have welcomed the news with pride and happiness. Many believe this appointment reflects the growing contribution of Indian clergy to the global Catholic Church.

Further details about the ordination ceremony and future responsibilities are expected in the coming weeks.
