Rising flood death toll puts Southeast Asia on alert

Jakarta: The death toll from severe floods across Southeast Asia has climbed to at least 161 as rescue teams continue to search for missing people and deliver aid to affected communities. Heavy rain, landslides and a rare tropical storm have damaged towns and villages in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, forcing tens of thousands of people to leave their homes.

Indonesia’s Sumatra island remains one of the worst hit areas with at least 72 confirmed deaths. Roads and bridges have been washed away, making it difficult for rescue workers to reach isolated communities. Emergency teams have been using helicopters and boats to send food water and medicine.

Thailand is facing its most serious disaster in years with 87 deaths reported in the southern provinces. More than 3.5 million people have been affected and many remain in temporary shelters. Some areas are still covered in deep water and authorities say it may take weeks for the floodwaters to fully recede.

Malaysia has also been affected as the tropical storm crossed its coastline earlier this week. While the number of deaths in Malaysia remains low thousands of people have been displaced and rough sea conditions continue to disrupt travel and rescue efforts. More than 1400 Malaysians stranded in flood affected areas of Thailand have been evacuated.

Local governments and humanitarian groups are providing food clean water medical support and temporary housing. Power and communication lines are slowly being restored but many communities remain cut off.

Weather officials warn that more heavy rain is possible in the coming days which could slow recovery work and add new risks. Rescue workers say the priority now is to reach remote areas locate missing people and support displaced families.

Authorities across the region are urging people in flood risk zones to stay alert and follow safety instructions as the situation continues to develop.
