Indonesian flood toll rises to 94 as mass grave burials begin

Batang Toru:  The Indonesian town of Batang Toru has buried several victims of recent floods and landslides in a mass grave as rescue teams continue to search for missing people. The severe flooding, caused by days of heavy rain linked to a rare tropical storm, has devastated communities across Sumatra.

Local officials said the mass grave was prepared because some bodies remained unclaimed and morgues were full. Residents and rescue workers said the decision was difficult but necessary due to health risks and limited storage space.

Across Indonesia, at least 94 people have been confirmed dead, and more than 80 remain missing. Officials warn that the number could rise as teams reach remote areas that have been cut off by damaged roads and blocked access routes.

More than 80,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Sumatra, and many are staying in temporary shelters. Power lines and communication networks have been damaged, making rescue operations slower and more challenging.

The Batang Toru area alone has reported more than 20 deaths. Witnesses described scenes of destroyed homes, fallen trees, and thick mud covering entire neighborhoods. Many families are searching for lost relatives while also trying to rebuild their lives.

The storm has also affected other Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia and Thailand, raising the regional death count to more than 180.

Emergency teams continue to work in difficult conditions to clear rubble, restore power, and find survivors. Authorities say food, medical supplies, and clean water are urgently needed in shelters.

Local residents say they are shocked by the scale of destruction and loss. Many fear more landslides if rain continues.

Government agencies and humanitarian groups are preparing long term assistance as the cleanup and recovery effort is expected to take months.
