New Delhi: German Doner Kebab also known as GDK is preparing to launch its first restaurant in India early next year as part of a larger expansion plan aimed at growing its international business. The fast casual brand known for its modern style kebabs already operates more than 170 restaurants across Europe the Middle East and North America.
The company has partnered with GBC India to open and manage its operations in the country. Under the agreement around 450 outlets are expected to open across major Indian cities over the next 15 years. The brand will focus on large urban markets and developing metro areas where demand for global food brands continues to grow.
GDK said it is aiming to reach 1.3 billion dollars in global sales within the next five years. The company believes India will play an important role in reaching that target because of its expanding middle class and growing appetite for international fast dining options.
To suit local preferences the company will not use beef on the menu in India. Instead lamb and other protein options will be offered. The brand also plans to introduce some variations to better align with regional tastes while keeping its signature recipes which include toasted waffle bread and handmade sauces.
GDK has seen strong growth in recent years especially in the United Kingdom where it recently opened its one hundred fiftieth restaurant. The company said it will continue investing in new markets but will not push ahead with previous discussions about a stock market listing until its global sales goals are met.
Industry analysts say India offers significant opportunity but also competition with both established international brands and local food chains already operating in the market. Success will depend on pricing supply chain strength and how well the menu connects with younger urban customers.
If the rollout meets expectations German Doner Kebab could become one of the fastest growing new fast food brands in India over the next decade.
