New Delhi: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will visit India on December 4 and 5 for high level meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu. This visit marks Putin’s first trip to India since 2021 and comes at a time when global politics and energy alliances are shifting.
India and Russia are expected to discuss a wide range of topics including defence cooperation, energy deals, bilateral trade and technology partnerships. Officials from both countries have said the visit is part of the 23rd India Russia Annual Summit.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that the two leaders will review the current state of the partnership and lay out a roadmap for future cooperation. A state banquet will also be hosted by President Murmu in honour of the Russian leader.
There are expectations that new agreements may be signed during the visit. Discussions are likely to include possible expansion of the S 400 missile defence system purchase, technology collaboration on navigation systems such as India’s NavIC and Russia’s GLONASS, and new steps to expand bilateral trade.
On the economic front, India’s imports of Russian crude oil saw an increase in November as refineries sought to secure supplies ahead of possible policy changes. Energy cooperation is expected to remain a key pillar of the relationship.
Putin’s visit is gaining attention globally as India continues to balance its ties with Russia while also maintaining relationships with Western countries. Analysts say the trip signals that Moscow and New Delhi intend to strengthen their partnership despite international pressure.
More details on the agreements and discussions are expected to emerge during and after the summit.
