Indian Jesuit priest recognised among world’s top one percent scientists

Chennai: Father Savarimuthu Ignacimuthu a Jesuit priest from Tamil Nadu has been recognised among the world’s top one percent of scientists in the field of biology. His name appeared in a global scientific ranking based on research publications citations and long term academic contribution.

Father Ignacimuthu who was born in 1948 serves as the Director of Xavier Research Foundation at St Xavier’s College in Palayamkottai Tamil Nadu. Over the years he has worked as a researcher educator and administrator. He has previously served as principal of Loyola College in Chennai and later as vice chancellor of Bharathiar University in Coimbatore and the University of Madras.

The Jesuit priest has published more than 800 scientific papers and written around 80 books. He also holds patents in India and in the United States for innovations related to agriculture and biotechnology. His research has focused mainly on entomology plant science bio pesticides and traditional medicinal knowledge.

One of his well known contributions is the development of a natural bio pesticide named PONNEEM which provides a safer and affordable option for farmers. His work has also supported environmental conservation efforts and encouraged sustainable agriculture. During the Covid 19 pandemic his research team produced a herbal hand sanitizer that was distributed especially among poor communities.

Father Ignacimuthu has received many awards during his career including the Tamil Nadu Scientist Award and the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Award for his contributions to science. A species of insect has also been named after him recognising his contribution to entomology.

Speaking about his journey he has often said that faith and science do not conflict but complement each other. He believes that scientific knowledge should help society especially the poor and farmers who depend on nature for their livelihood.

His recognition among the world’s top scientists stands as a significant moment not only for the scientific community but also for the Church in India showing how scientific research and service to society can go hand in hand.
