Putin begins India visit with focus on trade and strategic partnerships

New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India today for a two day official visit, marking an important moment in the long standing partnership between India and Russia. The visit began with a private dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflecting the close diplomatic ties between the two leaders.

Putin’s trip is his first visit to India since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022. It comes at a time when both countries are looking to strengthen cooperation in energy, defence and trade, even as global geopolitical tensions continue.

During the visit, India and Russia are expected to sign around ten intergovernmental agreements and more than a dozen commercial deals. The discussions will include key areas such as oil and energy supplies, defence equipment, labour mobility, space cooperation and education. Officials say both sides are working to reduce the current trade imbalance, as India imports large volumes of discounted oil from Russia, while Indian exports to Russia remain limited.

Energy will be one of the main topics during the summit. Russia is aiming to maintain its position as a major crude supplier to India, while India seeks long term affordable energy contracts. Defence cooperation is also expected to feature in the discussions. Reports suggest talks may include upgrades for existing systems and future joint projects.

Putin will attend a formal summit meeting on December 5 at Hyderabad House, followed by a state banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu. The visit will also include a business forum to encourage bilateral investment and commercial cooperation.

This visit is seen as a balancing act for India, which maintains strong ties with Russia but also works closely with the United States and European partners. Analysts say India is seeking to pursue strategic autonomy while ensuring stable partnerships with major global powers.

Officials from both sides have expressed confidence that the visit will deepen cooperation in trade, technology, energy and security, while opening new areas such as cultural exchange and labour mobility.

Further announcements are expected after the official summit talks tomorrow.
