Kyiv: Ukraine has said it wants an end to its war with Russia but stressed that any peace agreement must be fair and not based on pressure or concessions. Speaking at a meeting of the Organization for Security and Co operation in Europe, Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said the country is open to efforts toward ending the conflict but will not accept proposals that compromise its sovereignty.
Sybiha warned that the international community should avoid repeating mistakes of the past where aggressive actions were rewarded. He referred to earlier historical examples where appeasement failed to stop conflict and instead encouraged further aggression.
His comments came as diplomats continue discussions about possible peace frameworks. The United States recently held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and former President Donald Trump described those talks as reasonably good. However, there has been no clear progress toward an agreement.
The Kremlin has continued to insist that Russia intends to take full control of the Donbas region, either through military action or negotiations. This demand remains one of the main obstacles to a settlement, as Ukraine has repeatedly refused to give up territory.
Some European governments have expressed growing concern that Russia may be engaging in peace discussions only to gain time while continuing its military operations. Ukrainian officials say any peace process must include security guarantees and respect for internationally recognized borders.
The OSCE is being discussed as a possible monitoring body in any post war scenario, but the organization faces challenges. Its work has been affected by internal disagreements, and the United States is currently blocking its new annual budget while pushing for reforms.
With both sides holding firm to their positions, it remains unclear whether meaningful progress toward peace can be made soon. For now, Ukraine says the goal remains a genuine and lasting peace based on justice, not a temporary halt to fighting.
