Kochi: Passengers at Kochi Airport faced disruption and frustration on Thursday as IndiGo canceled multiple flights, leaving travelers stranded and prompting protests. The unrest was particularly visible after passengers on a Kochi to Hyderabad flight were informed of the cancellation only on the morning of the scheduled departure.
The sudden cancellation triggered immediate protests at the airport, with some demonstrators highlighting the inconvenience caused to travelers. Reports suggest that the protest included both passengers and, notably, some IndiGo employees voicing concerns over operational issues.
IndiGo has officially announced that flight operations will continue to be curtailed for the coming weeks, estimating that normal service levels may resume only in approximately two months. In a statement, the airline expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers and emphasized that active measures are being taken to stabilize operations and minimize further disruptions.
The airline attributed the cancellations and delays to the Flight Duty Time Limit (FDTL) regulations recently implemented by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These rules are designed to ensure that pilots receive adequate rest to maintain safety standards. IndiGo stated that the delay in full implementation of the FDTL has temporarily affected flight scheduling and crew availability, leading to service reductions.
Passengers have been advised to check for updates and alternative arrangements, while IndiGo has pledged to provide assistance for those impacted by the cancellations. Airport authorities have also stepped up coordination to manage the crowds and reduce inconvenience.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by airlines in balancing operational schedules with newly enforced regulatory requirements, underscoring the wider impact of safety regulations on passenger convenience.
