New Delhi: Indian Railways has added more train coaches and approved special services to support thousands of passengers affected by large scale flight cancellations across the country. The move comes after IndiGo faced a major disruption in its operations due to shortage of crew and scheduling issues, which led to a sharp increase in demand for train travel.
According to officials, 116 additional coaches have been added to 37 trains across different zones and 114 extra train trips are planned over the coming days. These include sleeper coaches, general second class and air conditioned chair car compartments. This step is expected to help around 35000 extra passengers every day.
Railway authorities have also announced between four and six special trains to manage the sudden rush, especially on busy routes. More routes are being studied and additional services may be announced if needed.
Trains in northern and southern regions have already received extra coaches. High demand trains such as the Jammu New Delhi Rajdhani Express and several services from Southern Railway are among those strengthened.
The aviation crisis has left many passengers stranded at airports across India. With hundreds of IndiGo flights cancelled or delayed, the railways has become the main fallback option for travel.
Officials said the railway network is prepared to expand capacity further if the situation continues. Emergency coordination teams have also been deployed to monitor ticket sales and crowd movement.
Passengers have welcomed the decision as train tickets on many routes had sold out soon after flight cancellations began.
Authorities advised travelers to check schedules and seat availability before booking and said efforts are being made to ensure smooth travel during this difficult period.
