Russia launches massive drone and missile attack as peace talks continue

Kyiv: Ukraine faced one of the largest overnight attacks in recent months as Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles across several regions while peace discussions involving United States representatives continued in Kyiv.

According to Ukrainian officials, Russia fired 653 drones and 51 missiles during the attack. Air defense systems intercepted most of them, but several explosions were reported after strikes hit energy facilities and civilian infrastructure. At least 29 locations across the country were affected. Authorities confirmed that eight people were injured during the assault, including three in the Kyiv region.

One of the significant targets was the railway hub in Fastiv near the capital. The Ukrainian Railways administration said the strike damaged a depot and several train carriages. Train services in the region were temporarily interrupted, causing delays and cancellations.

The timing of the attack drew international attention as it happened during ongoing diplomatic discussions between Ukrainian officials and American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks are part of efforts connected to US President Donald Trump’s proposed plan to bring an end to the war.

Ukrainian and US officials said progress in the negotiations depends on Russia showing clear commitment to reduce military actions. European leaders also expressed skepticism, stating that continued attacks make it difficult to believe Russia is sincerely interested in peace.

Despite the strikes, discussions are expected to continue in the coming days. However, with winter approaching and repeated attacks damaging power stations and essential services, concerns about the humanitarian and logistical situation in Ukraine are increasing.

Officials said restoring electricity and railway operations remains a priority while defense systems are being reinforced to counter future strikes.

The situation remains tense, and both sides are under growing pressure to demonstrate whether negotiations can lead to any meaningful reduction in hostilities.
