Death toll rises to 25 in Goa nightclub fire as inspections begin

Panaji: A day after the devastating fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, the official death toll remains at 25, and the Goa government has launched statewide inspections of nightlife venues to prevent another tragedy.

The fire, believed to have started from a gas cylinder explosion, spread quickly inside the building late Saturday night. Many victims were unable to escape due to smoke and blocked exits. Among the dead were tourists and staff. Several others are still receiving treatment and some remain in critical condition.

On Sunday, teams from the police, fire services, and local administration visited multiple clubs and restaurants across North Goa. Officials confirmed that some establishments were asked to shut down after serious safety violations were found, including missing fire exits and faulty safety equipment.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the government is treating the incident with urgency and seriousness. He promised strict action against those responsible and announced that a full audit of entertainment venues will continue in the coming days.

Police have detained the nightclub’s manager and are searching for the owner as part of the investigation into possible negligence and violation of safety rules.

Outside hospitals, families of the victims continued to identify bodies and complete formalities. Some relatives said the process has been overwhelming and demanded fast accountability.

Tourists and locals in the area described a heavy and quiet mood following the disaster. Many expressed concern about safety standards at popular nightlife locations in the state.

Doctors treating the injured reported slow but steady progress for some survivors, while others are still battling life threatening injuries caused by smoke inhalation.

Authorities are expected to release further updates as the investigation continues and more details emerge about how the fire spread and why safety measures failed.
